Any connoisseur of the Brat Pack era in Hollywood would be able to write you a thesis on the importance of the drive-in movie theatre. Whether it was the setting for a true love, a battle of brawn or a jazzy musical number, the genre of 1980’s teen movies had us all wishing for a picturesque backdrop of our own. Next year, these star-spangled dreams will finally come true as Mumbai gets it’s very own drive-in right in the heart of the Bandra Kurla complex!
There have previously been attempts at this concept, at Napeansea Road and in BKC itself but this project promises a far grander scale. The cinema will be set up at Maker Maxity and will be run by trusty household name, PVR cinemas. The complex will hold about 300 cars per show and each car will cost Rs. 1000 to bring in’s up to you how many people you put in that . (We imagine a lot of shorter Mumbaikars will be stuffed in the trunk of a car next year)
For the more discerning crowd, there is a fine-dining area where you can enjoy a luxury dinner while you take in the movie. The food and beverage prices – as with all movie theatre treats-- will of course be jaw-dropping but in these case the movie itself will be free of charge. There’s one further option for people who just can’t make up their minds and a six screen multiplex located below the drive-in will show movies in a more conventional atmosphere.
It took Mumbai a while to get round to something other countries have been dealing with for decades but we’re definitely glad we made it there in the end. Bring on the poodle skirts and hair gel because dates nights will never be the same again.
