The world of NFTs has experienced a rapid and exponential rise to popularity. What lies at the intersection of art and technology quickly reached a pedestal not many other art forms have reached and Indian artists were prompt to jump on this train and churn out their brilliant takes on NFTs.
Smriti Choudhary, who goes by the name of ‘Airphish’, also put out her renditions of these non-fungible tokens on platforms such as Foundation and WazirX. Her collection, ‘Nazar Battu’ (a type of mask in Indian culture used to ward off evil), is the newest on our radar. Applying the distinct characteristics of these masks to well-known and global personalities, the resulting artwork is amusing and eye-catching. An immersive quality which Airphish introduced to these Battus is that of superpowers. Almost as if you are picking your own avatar in a game, these Nazar Battus represent particular powers and capabilities. We’re here for this gamification-meets-NFT approach!
An aspect that sets this Airphish series apart is that she has created music to accompany her artwork, giving it a whole new dimension.
These artworks are not only at the top of their game but also incite a childlike excitement. The familiarity of the Nazar Battus that we see on several doors and gates when met with the immense skill required to create this art form, results in a new wonderment –– almost as if two universes are meeting.
Nazar Battus is an embodiment of nuances of Indian culture meeting a new-age form of art. Airphish’s exciting and quirky approach to this series makes it a special one and the integration of something so inherently Indian is a delight.
Three rare Nazar Battu NFTs will be minted on Foundation on 17 June, 2022 at 10:30 AM and will be going on sale on 19 June, 2022.
