The iconic RK Laxman’s Servants of India is set to be adapted into a web series produced by Vishesh Bhatt. Servants of India is a collection of stories each centred on comic domestic workers, each developed by Laxman’s trademark wit. “It [The series] would be a satirical drama on the casual class prejudices we all have in India, punched with the gripping absurdity of situations that have occurred in many of our own lives or with our friends,” noted a statement from the makers.

The statement further added, “In this series, every character has certain idiosyncrasies and Laxman has used his trademark wit to fictionalise real world people into characters with gripping twists...Vishesh Bhatt visions to adapt the characters with a new age and quirky treatment.”

The rights have been secured by Bhatt and his team from Laxman’s family and RK IPR Management Pvt Ltd, a company founded by Laxman. Reports note that the series will be following Laxman’s work as a satirical take on class distinctions and prejudices in India. “R.K. Laxman had interesting stories to tell and his vulnerable characters enhanced his vision. I am so glad that his family believed in me and gave me the opportunity to make this series,” said Bhatt.

This is the first of Laxman’s works to be adapted for a digital platform, and is among one of a number of adaptations of great writing works viewers have to look forward to including Roald Dahl, short stories by Satyajit Ray and Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts.
