“Natural Selection” - Capturing The Beauty Of Design Through Human Anatomy

...the beauty of the human body is that it hasn’t a single muscle which doesn’t serve its purpose; that there’s not a line wasted; that every detail of it fits one idea, the idea of a man and the life of a man.” - Ayn Rand

Design, as a whole, serves a much larger purpose than that of beautification. The idea of design is to serve as a tool of ease and simplicity, thereby resolving problems of everyday regime. It is key in everything that we do, and affects us in more ways than we can imagine. From the buildings that we live in, to the strainer you use for your morning chai, to the velcro on your shoes, almost every aspect of our lives is governed by the principles of design. Quite simply, design makes navigating through the ups and downs of routine a lot easier.

One of the finest examples of quality design has walked the planet for millennia- humans. Human bodies are the perfect case study with regard to design principles, with every aspect of our anatomy correlating to a functionality. In this photo-series, termed “Natural Selection”, I aimed at a narrative that spoke about design aesthetics that are evidently present in the human body. Every element of our framework is in correspondence to serving a purpose, be it the curve of our backs, the rhythm of the lines on our palms, or the texture of our skin when our hair stands on end.

In the evolutionary timeline, natural selection is an important process that determines the adaptation of organisms to their surroundings, in order for them to survive. It is by this system of biology, that humans evolved to where we are today, replete with a balance of gears, levers and interface, as well as the intellectual ability to utilize these tools. Keeping in sync with these factors, “Natural Selection” seemed like the perfect title befitting the overall theme of the photo-series.

“Natural Selection” focuses on the beauty and complexities of human anatomy, and the principles and elements of design that govern it. The prime intention is to be able to see the diversified nature of design in and around us, and to portray it through a photographic narrative.
