The Museum Of Moving Image Is Screening An Indian Documentary Series By Pratik Parmar

The Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, New York which was originally inaugurated in 1988, exists to expand public understanding and appreciation of the art, history, technique and technology of film, television and digital media by collecting, preserving and providing access to moving-image related artefacts via multimedia exhibitions and educational programming. In keeping with the ethos of the museum, the ongoing series, “Changing the Picture” taking place at the museum celebrates and explores the work of film and television artists of colour who are bringing in diverse voices to the screen. The series, which consists of screenings and discussions with directors, writers, actors, scholars, and more, includes contemporary work as well as historically significant work that has played an important role in an attempt to “change the picture” and bring a wider variety of voices and visions to the moving image. “Project Heartland”, a collection of short documentary films by director Pratik Parmar, is a part of the ongoing series which is to be screened on 24th January, 2020. It is going to be a digital projection in collaboration with the collective, Ahmedabad Talkies.

A collection of short documentary films telling the stories of Dalit-Bahujan folks across the Indian state of Gujarat, it chronicles caste atrocities and acts of superhuman resistance. The series offers a critical lens on what shapes and un-shapes political agency within Gujarat and India as a whole. It includes a depiction of the Una flogging incident where seven members of a Dalit family were assaulted by a group of dominant caste vigilantes under the pretext of cow protection, to the frustration and despair of Muslim Bahujan citizens seeking political rights.

The documentary series explores themes like the plight and assertion of Valmikis, Dalit womanhood, the role of the Muslims of Godhra in the upcoming Gujarat elections etc.
