As the 75th edition of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival ushers in yet another golden phase for the screening and proliferation of distinct global cinema and the South-Asian community in particular has a lot to look forward to. The roster of this year’s screenings has a promising number of films emerging from this region that are avant-garde, path-breaking and are self-standing.

Here is a list of groundbreaking South-Asian films that are currently being screened at the 75th Cannes Film Festival.

I. Joyland by Saim Sadiq

Joyland marks Pakistan’s first entrant into the Official Selection category of the festival this year. The film is a bittersweet journey of a Pakistani family that is bound by rigid societal norms. It follows the inner conflicts and evolving queer identity of the lead character whose self-expression is bound by the patriarchal framework that is enclosed within.

II. Hunt By Lee Jung-jae

This action feature film marks the directorial debut of Lee Jung-Jae, the breakout sensation from Squid Game. The narrative follows the building tensions caused by the military dictatorship in South Korea and the cast’s search for a hidden spy within their own military unit.

III. All That Breathes By Shaunak Sen

This 90-minute documentary sheds light on the deepening environmental issues that threaten the planet. It follows the story of two Indian brothers who rescue injured birds and develop a special bond with them. The endearing and bittersweet documentary also happens to be one of India’s only selections at the Special Screenings event this year.

IV. The Beer Girl In Yangon by Sein Lyan Tun

The feature film follows the path of a 17-year old girl named Lily who is forced into manual labour at a local bar in Korea where prostitution is the norm for most employees. Throughout its run, the story also traces the evolution of Lily’s relationship with her colleague, Moon.
