Gamers, Here’s How You Can Fight Coronavirus By Donating Your Unused GPU Computing Power

This one is for the gamers, finally! NVIDIA announced on 13 March, 2020 a new initiative that engages gamers and graphics enthusiasts alike. In collaboration with scientists from Stanford University, a project called Folding@home, the company is urging gamers to donate their unused GPU and CPU computational power towards the cause.

A Reddit post detailing all the requirements was created three days ago by Pedro19 - PC Master Race Creator.

Join us and donate your unused GPU and CPU computing power to fight against Coronavirus (and several other illnesses, like Cancer, Parkinson’s, etc). To download CLICK HERE.

To learn more about the project, or if you need more instructions on how to run it, check out PC Master Race.

Reddit users are thrilled at the opportunity to contribute, as is displayed in the comment thread under the post.

PC Master Race lists out the 3 step joining process here. You don’t have to choose usernames or even verify e-mails. They urge everyone to download the program and choose the disease research, as listed on their site, they would like to donate their computational power. Gamers with large unused GPU banks can contribute more computational power. The more number of computational cores involved, the faster you can compute the data. Also join them for an AMA session on March 19, 4:00 PM EST.

One such Software Engineer/ Gamer-by-hobby, Aditya Verma tells us about this unique platform:

“There is a global health crisis on the verge. Everyone can somehow help fight against adversity - there is a project called Folding@home from Stanford University. People in those laboratories are working tirelessly day and night, the least we could do is use our computers to contribute towards the fight against this pandemic.” He further says that if you have GPU, one can run the program on their CPU and GPU simultaneously.

Most laptops nowadays, come equipped with a graphics card, this means almost everyone can contribute while their computer is sitting idle.

Think about it as your at-home contribution to help researchers develop a solution for the Coronavirus pandemic at hand and more such diseases. This platform is one of a kind and could lead to major breakthroughs if mobilised on a large scale.
