Indian metal band Midhaven has been crowned the winner of Wacken Metal Battle India 2026, earning a coveted spot at the international finals held during Germany's renowned Wacken Open Air festival. Known for blending heavy psych and sludge metal with Indian ragas, mythology and classical influences, the Mumbai-based outfit continues to push the boundaries of Indian metal.
For over a decade, Mumbai-based metal band Midhaven has been steadily carving out a space for itself within India's underground music scene. Now, the heavy psych/sludge outfit has added another milestone to its journey by winning Wacken Metal Battle India 2026, securing the opportunity to represent the country at the international finals of Wacken Metal Battle at the iconic Wacken Open Air festival in Germany.
Widely regarded as the world's largest heavy metal festival, Wacken Open Air has long been considered a dream stage for metal musicians. This year's edition features genre-defining acts such as Judas Priest, Def Leppard, Powerwolf, Sabaton, Sepultura and Lamb of God, placing Midhaven among some of the most celebrated names in heavy music.
The victory comes after the band emerged at the top of a fiercely contested national competition featuring some of India's strongest underground acts. Midhaven combines sludge and heavy psychedelic metal with the tonal depth of Indian ragas, drawing inspiration from mythology, philosophy and classical music. Their acclaimed 2021 concept album, 'Of The Lotus & The Thunderbolt', exemplified this approach, while their latest single, 'The Veiler', inspired by Raag Todi, continues to push those boundaries.
The Wacken triumph follows an impressive Europe and UK tour that saw the band perform across 19 cities in seven countries. Along the way, they became the first Indian band to play Desertfest London, earning praise from audiences and listeners across demographics.
Midhaven's achievement, signals a growing global appetite for Indian metal that embraces its own cultural roots. At Wacken, the band will carry not only India's metal scene onto one of the world's biggest stages, but also a sound shaped unmistakably by where it comes from.
