'Field Notes on Seeing' is a photography exhibition by Soham Joshi at Mumbai’s NCPA, featuring photographs made through an instinctive point-and-shoot process alongside text by Srushti Sharma and curation by Gurnoor Singh. The project explores the connection between photographs and the moments, places and feelings behind them, expanding from a 2025 photo zine into a gallery exhibition.
Mumbai-based photographer Soham Joshi is bringing his photographic project 'Field Notes on Seeing' to the Dilip Piramal Art Gallery at NCPA this October. The project began as a series of photographs Joshi made instinctively with a point-and-shoot camera, gradually taking shape as a collection of images, writing and tactile elements. Curated by photographer and curator Gurnoor Singh, with text by Srushti Sharma, the exhibition follows the project as it moves from a photo zine into a gallery setting. At its centre is the relationship between a photograph and the moment, feeling and place that existed when it was made.
Joshi’s work has taken him across a range of subjects, from queer identity and urban spaces to construction sites and musicians. He studied Visual Arts and Photography at the Symbiosis School of Photography in Pune before completing an MA in Photography at the University of Brighton. His project 'Camera and The Queer Image' used paper negatives to photograph queer people in Chennai, while 'Blotched Edifice' involved photographing construction sites and working concrete, dust and corrosion into the resulting prints. Alongside his personal work, Joshi has been photographing musicians since 2018, with his images appearing in publications including Rolling Stone India, Indian Music Diaries and Rock Street Journal.
'Field Notes on Seeing' first appeared publicly as a photo zine through Editions JOJO, the Mumbai-based independent artist-book publisher and photography platform. Joshi presented the publication at a JOJO event in November 2025 alongside Allan Parker’s 'The Fragment Corpora.' Singh curated the zine and has continued working with the project as it develops into this exhibition. Singh is also a photographer, with his own work including 'Life at Chawri,' a long-running series made around Delhi’s Chawri Bazaar, alongside a growing curatorial practice spanning photography and other visual forms.
For the NCPA presentation, the photographs will be presented alongside Sharma’s writing and tactile elements, giving the project a physical exhibition beyond its original zine. The show focuses on the connection between the photographs and the circumstances in which they were made, with the images, words and material elements forming one larger narrative. “Field Notes on Seeing” will be on view from October 8 to October 18, 2026, at the Dilip Piramal Art Gallery, NCPA, Mumbai, from 12pm to 8pm daily. The preview and artist walkthrough take place on October 8, with the preview running from 5pm to 9pm and the walkthrough beginning at 5pm.
