Kolkata’s cultural landscape has always been shaped by how its institutions, archives, and independent creative spaces spilled into the city’s public life. Now, a new generation of museums and galleries is adding a breath of fresh air into that well-trodden cultural map. From an immersive museum exploring India’s many languages to a new home for contemporary art, a space preserving the cultural heritage of Kolkata’s Chinese community, and a former colonial prison turned museum, these spaces offer different ways of looking at the city and its layered past.

Here are five new and noteworthy museums and galleries to add to your Kolkata itinerary:

The Shabdalok, or Museum of Word, located in Belvedere House on the National Library campus in Alipore, is India’s first museum dedicated to the country’s linguistic diversity and literary heritage. Its galleries explore the evolution of languages and scripts, the relationship between language and identity, and the country’s rich regional traditions of oral storytelling and performance.

The National Gallery of Modern Art’s Kolkata campus is a cultural space dedicated to modern and contemporary Indian art. Housed in the Old Currency Building in Dalhousie Square, Kolkata’s historic centre, the space puts Indian creative practices in conversation with the country’s changing social, political, and cultural landscape.

The Cheenapara Heritage Gallery is India’s only heritage space dedicated to India’s small but significant Indian-Chinese community. Located in Tiretta Bazar, inside India’s oldest living Chinatown, the intimate museum and gallery archives the story of Kolkata’s Chinese community, shaped by colonial-era migration and subsequent assimilation, food culture, and trade. This is a natural entry point to the city’s Chinese heritage for those interested in Kolkata’s lesser-known histories.

Once one of the most notorious prison complexes of the British Raj, the Alipore Central Jail was converted into the Alipore Museum in 2022, today, the museum houses an outpost of the Experimenter gallery and several permanent exhibitions archiving Kolkata’s colonial and political past through the architecture of incarceration, personal histories and the material traces of prison life.
