A One-Of-A-Kind Feminist Performance Is Coming To Mumbai

Tansha Vohra

The verdict is in - we’ve found the one thing that single-handedly ups the ante on this weekend’s agenda. Two Sanksaari Girls, collaborating with Sexonomics The Band, comes to Mumbai this weekend before heading off on a grand European tour. This one hour visual and sonic studded evening is a spoken-word tale told through theatrical poetry, song and dance, defying expectations as it tiptoes and then redefines the lines of Sanskar and what it means to raise wild-spirited women.

Nupur Saraswat and Kate Black-Regan are the two leads to the show, Two Sanskaari Girls. They happened to meet at an open mic night at The Humming Tree, and knew that their meeting was no coincidence. What brought them together was their complementary styles, their ability to grow as creators, and the fact that they instantly became friends. They have been traveling around with their show since March of this year.

So what is the show, you ask? “The idea behind Two Sanskaari Girls was to revolutionize what being a modern Indian woman, or any modern woman, looks like”, Nupur says in this video. Kate explains that there are many vignettes through the performance, it doesn’t follow one linear storyline. All the stories somehow manage to encompass each other, that is key. They address issues born at a systemic level, and extrapolate how the same issues affect ALL of us, not just a select few - personal and political in nature. One of the major points addressed in the performance is ‘choice’, and peculiarity of having a choice, but not realising that you do.

This entire performance is complemented by Sexonomics The Band, founded by Ramya Padan and Sudeep Pagedar. Ramya is a writer, blogger, business consultant and spoken word performer who addresses the trials and tribulations of being a modern feminist, relationship politics and the city she calls home. Sudeep is also a spoken word artist, whose poem ‘The Privileges of a Penis’ went viral not too long ago. Together, they will confront the patriarchy and the great Indian sanskaar, all while weaving wonder and breathe magic into the performance.
