Around India Through Its Homegrown Food Trucks

Ava Gilder

My love for food trucks began when I saw Chef Carl Casper in the 2014 movie Chef, where actors Jon Favreau and John Leguizamo zig-zagged around each other to whip up delicious cubanos, yucca frites, and medianoches. The first time I had anything from a food truck was two years later in 2016 when I was away from home at university in Pune. Many a night I have found my roommates and me standing at the local food truck in our pyjamas, waiting to grab a quick sandwich before running back to our hostel to sneak in a minute before curfew began.

By then, Zomato and Swiggy had both blown up in popularity as food-delivery apps and there really was no reason to step out to get dinner, especially when pulling those pesky all-nighters. But the call of fresh, hot, delicious cheese sandwiches was too much to bear. Check out these food trucks for your own Chef experience!

I. Bombay Food Truck
Currently touted as Bombay’s biggest food truck, they launched in 2015 and now have a fleet of 3 bright red food trucks around the city. Their menu is a clash of desi-videsi food, and they have everything from Bombay-style hot dogs to tilapia burgers to a pav bhaji roll.

II. The Cheese Truck, Pune
Open in Wadgaon Sheri and Viman Nagar in Pune, the Cheese Truck has been giving us delicious grilled cheese sandwiches since 2015. Perfect for those late-night munchies, they open at 6 pm and close at 4 am. If you have more of a sweet tooth, their grilled Nutella and Oreo sandwiches are amazing too.

III. A Hot Tin Roof, Mumbai
Mumbai’s newest food truck is the fast expanding A Hot Tin Roof. They started off in Andheri with a set menu of savoury sandwiches and have since branched out into home delivery. A meat lovers’ paradise, the must-tries here are the steakwich, the chicken katsu sando, and the shrimp po’boy. Their peri-peri fries are served generously and the mixed berry mascarpone dessert sandwich is a perfect messy pick-me-up.

IV. The Fruit Shop On Wheels, Chennai
Located around Harrington Road in Chennai, this is the perfect spot for an evening drink after the searing heat of the afternoon. Only serving super fresh fruit juices and milkshakes, this is one you can go to for a quick quench of thirst.

V. The Spitfire BBQ Food Truck, Bangalore
From Kammanahalli, Bangalore comes The Spitfire BBQ Truck. Their New-York inspired menu with Chilli Hot Dogs, Hickory-Smoked Barbecue Chilli Chicken Pops and slow-cooked Pork Ribs, this is going to be a gloriously messy affair. Open for pre-orders on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday, they have transitioned to fulfilling orders on Swiggy Go due to the pandemic.

VI. Agdum Bagdum, Kolkata
Offering up American-Indian fusion food, Agdum Bagdum in Ballygunge serves everything from burritos and wraps, to momos and fries. If you’re in the mood for something more desi, try the Hyderabadi chicken biryani. They also serve a mean juicy-lucy burger, perfect for the carnivore in your group.

VII. Super Sucker, Delhi NCR

Owner Karan Malik launched Super Sucker in 2015 and was one of Delhi’s first food trucks. Serving up kheema and kulcha delicacies, they are currently open for delivery and for catering for private events. They also have momos and desi-inspired burritos and wraps.
