Inspired by the annual Fat Bear Week, Delhi now has its own competition for the city’s fattest dogs. Hosted by Fat Dogs of Delhi, the online contest puts 64 dogs into an Instagram voting bracket, with rounds running from September 24 to 29 before one contender is crowned the winner. The competition is open to dogs across Delhi, and owners can enter by sending a photo, their dog’s name and their area to Fat Dogs of Delhi, with supporters also encouraged to campaign for their favourites.

It's Fat Bear Week! Every September Alaska’s Katmai National Park puts 16 brown bears into a March Madness-style bracket and lets the public vote on who has done the best job of packing on weight before winter. The bears spend the summer absolutely demolishing salmon, building up the fat reserves they’ll rely on during hibernation, and then get judged by millions of people sitting at home with very passionate opinions about bear girth. The competition began as Fat Bear Tuesday in 2014 and has since become a full-blown annual event. Last year’s winner was 32 Chunk, a roughly 1,200-pound male who took the title despite having a broken jaw, and he’s back to defend his crown this year which many figure he will.

And now, Delhi has decided that its dogs deserve their own version. ’Fat Dogs of Delhi', an Instagram page featuring the chonkiest critters from across the city, is holding an online fat dog competition — 64 dogs enter, one dog wins, and the netizens get to pick the winner. The first round began on September 24 and it's been a non-stop dose of homegrown fluffy chunguses since then. The grand finale is set to take place over today and tomorrow with in person ballots taking place at various locations across the city.

If your dog has the necessary heft and the competitive spirit to enter, getting them into the bracket is remarkably easy. DM Fat dogs of delhi with a picture of your dog, their name and their area of Delhi. If you are especially invested in seeing your candidate take the crown, there is also an option to send campaign pamphlets, which the page says it will happily post on its Instagram. So, if your neighbourhood has a suspiciously round Labrador, a heavily built Indie or a pug who appears to have never encountered a vegetable, this is their moment. The Delhi fat dog electorate awaits.
