Focus Group Radio Is Shining A Light On Chennai's Criminally Underrated Music Scene

Focus Group Studio is building an ecosystem of musicians, artists and listeners in one of India's most undiscovered music cities, Chennai.

Chennai's contemporary music scene is gaining recognition through Focus Group Radio, a collective spotlighting local talent with intimate vinyl showcases, Listening Sessions, and events like The Angular Festival. By fostering a hyper-local ecosystem, they aim to amplify the city's diverse musical voices, proving that the next big sound might emerge from unexpected places.

We all know just how diverse India sounds. From our cities to the music coming out of every corner of this country, we cannot be one voice. Some cities in India, from Mumbai to Bengaluru, are synonymous with being a breeding ground for the next musical voices. And by the way music is covered, mainstream media (and even we) tend to focus on the scenes and musicians emerging from these spaces, sometimes sidelining the extremely loud and present voices found everywhere.

One city that doesn’t get due credit for its musical calibre is Chennai. We’re all aware of the rich musical heritage and tradition the city has carried, but it hasn’t shone a light on its contemporary music scene. From metal to indie rock, Chennai has a distinct voice for it all. And the Chennai-based music collective Focus Group Radio is trying to spotlight just that. They also have a database of playlists, archiving interesting and eclectic music from across the world,

With pop-up vinyl showcases and Listening Sessions curated for only 15 people to ensure an immersive and intimate experience, Focus Group Radio is trying to build an ecosystem in Chennai that champions its music scene. They even hosted The Angular Festival, a day of music and art from across the city from local acts like Komododo and CDV to an art gallery section highlighting the many artists emerging in Chennai. Focus Group Studio is an extremely hyper local endeavour, trying to stir up the city.

Next up on 18th October, for one of their Listening Sessions they have ‘Are Friends Electric?’, which will take you on a journey through the history of electronic music. Everything from dance music to psychedelic pop will be on the curriculum perfect for anyone interested in just knowing more about the genre.

India’s music has never spoken in a single voice, and Chennai’s is one worth leaning in to hear. Focus Group Radio is building the rooms, the records and the audience itself, one intimate session at a time. It's its simple case that the next big sound doesn’t always come from the usual cities. Sometimes it’s playing a few streets away, to a room of fifteen people, waiting for you to show up.
