Music education in India has just got a whole lot better. The Global Music Institute (GMI), located in Greater Noida, has officially become the first music college in the country to join the prestigious Berklee International Network (BIN).

GMI was established in 2011 by two brothers, Tarun and Aditya Balani, with the hope of introducing a unique, contemporary approach to music education in the country along with facilitating cross-cultural musical dialogue. They pride themselves in intermingling of traditional and modern music styles, as well as their international faculty, the brilliant facilities and all-inclusive education the students receive. With GMI’s Berklee partnership, their curriculum has just become all the more exceptional.

“The most exciting thing about this partnership is that GMI and Berklee College of Music will together design outreach programs to connect with Indian musicians who wish to study music and enable their learning. We are planning an outreach program across India and our first program begins in November 2017,” Tarun Balani, Artistic Director, tells Homegrown. “This partnership will help GMI students grow and develop their skills and careers with a global focus and access promising new ideas through interesting partnerships across academic study, performance, faculty and students from both institutions.”

Both Tarun and Aditya are graduates from the Berklee College of Music themselves, which greatly aided their ability to construct a comprehensive education program that has created an incredible impact on how music is studied in India. They’ve made themselves globally recognized by highly coveted institutes, such as Berklee and made this partnership a reality.

“Both GMI and Berklee have a global vision for music education...they’ve been extremely supportive and understand our vision and mission as an institute,” Aditya (GMI Director) tells us.

GMI will now be able to provide their students access to no less than 23 of the top music institutes in the world, and, in turn, give these institutions direct access to GMI’s massive talent pool. This partnership has enabled them to be true to their position as a truly global institute for music education. The partnership is further cementing their position as a truly global institute for music education in a country where music doesn’t receive the importance and attention it deserves.
