Our race against the climate crisis is one that demands immense collaboration. No one country or region can stand guard as the rest of the world watches on. The kind of change required worldwide must be meaningful, measurable and impactful — if not, the movie 2012 (2009) may seem closer to reality than fiction.
As a step towards a sustainable future, it was announced by Aditya Thackeray, Maharashtra’s Cabinet Minister for Tourism, Environment and Protocol, that state capital Mumbai has now been accepted as a contributing city by C40 Cities, a global climate activist organisation.
While Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata are already part of the C40 club (Bengaluru and Jaipur are listed as temporarily inactive), the addition of Mumbai signifies the active chase for a healthier and safer future.
Sustainability, clean resources, and minimal pollution of various kinds are not simply rubrics to assess how we are handling the climate crisis. These are also indicators of hope for a future that nurtures and safeguards beings across the planet.
Similar to Mumbai’s promise to do better, we hope the rest of India’s leading cities follow suit.
