Inferno 2.0: Asia's First Virtual Art & Design College Fest

Meghna Mathew

There’s something about college fests that makes one feel almost invincible — spending quality time with your friends, competing in your choice of skill, and witnessing various performances may sound rather regular, but once you step foot into the fest’s atmosphere, there seems to be nowhere else you would rather be.

Amongst many other things, the Coronavirus pandemic has steamrolled over college fest plans too. However, that didn’t prove to be enough to take down the team at Indian School Of Design & Innovation (ISDI). Last year, they organised the first edition of their inter-collegiate fest, Inferno, which was Asia’s first inclusive and accessible creative arts, film and design fest. Not limited to just design colleges, the fest saw participation from over 1,500 students.

This year, they have much bigger plans. Shifting all their operations online, Inferno 2.0 will be Asia’s first virtual intercollegiate creative arts and design fest. “Our aim is to adapt to the current situation while continuing to grow and engage in the creative space. We will be going completely virtual this year while staying true to our vision and mission,” says Sanyukta Mathure, Chairperson of Inferno 2.0. Scheduled for 27, 28 and 29 November 2020, the fest’s mission and vision of providing creative minds with a platform to engage and grow through challenges remains undeterred. The only (and biggest) difference is that it will now take place on a self-built virtual platform.

Consisting of five creative streams, Inferno 2.0 will host events in the fields of design and visual arts, film media and photography, literary arts, performing arts and informals. Team Inferno plans on inviting contingents from over 400 colleges and opening their virtual gates to other people who might wish to participate as individuals.

With over 30 events spread over three days, this fest should be a must on the to-do list of young, creative minds across India. Set to extract your creativity, Inferno 2.0 will be testing just how out-of-the-box you can think and come up with your own 2020 conspiracy theory (among the many pre-existing ones) in an event called ‘2020 A Conspiracy’. Another interesting event, ‘Jigsaw Stories’ would demand you to make a movie trailer from clips of different movies. If such events intrigue you more than intimidate, Inferno 2.0 is the place for you to be.

In all honesty, the art community is what has kept most people going through quarantine, and for that we are grateful. Inferno 2.0 will allow for much more of these very artists to shine through and result in a more conducive art and design community.

While the aspect of physical presence may be unavailable this year, Team Inferno is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that this fest remains a remarkable and memorable one too. It’s an opportunity for artists to prove that their talent and ideas fueled by passion and vigour do the talking. It may be through a screen, but Inferno 2.0 promises the same excitement and enthusiasm.
