This Eco-Friendly Ganapati Idol Grows Into A Tree After Visarjan

While most of us living in our concrete jungles only care to think about global warming when we are driven into social media discussions, most commonly when World Environment Day is around the corner; the consequences that our planet suffers the rest of the time stops for nobody. Especially so during festivals, when we are so merry in celebration that we completely disregard the environment, as would be observed in the upcoming festivity of Ganesh Chaturthi. However, there are 4 men who are encouraging people to do things differently; to ensure that the celebration of faith stays in tandem with nature. They have come up with the Sasya Ganapathi; a biodegradable Ganapathi kit that grows into a tree after visarjan.

Bharath, Sudhakar, Puneet, and Vivek; the four childhood friends, based in Bangalore have always been passionate about gardening; and have felt strongly for the cause of working towards the betterment of the environment. During an Environment Day Celebration in their college, they noticed how everyone would just plant a sapling on June 5 and then forget all about it. “We wanted to encourage people to plant more trees and as we started doing that, it was time for Ganesh Chaturthi. It really saddened us to see people using POP Ganpati idols, so we started motivating people to use clay idols. Then suddenly we thought, why not combine the two?” says Bharath.

The four friends started researching on how this could be made feasible; sowing a seed in the same pot where Visarjan was also done. The group tried different methods for 6 months to ensure that the Visarjan is satisfactory and the plants grow well. They finally came up with the Sasya Ganapathi kit. ‘Sasya’ translates to ‘plant’ in Kannada.

The Sasya Ganapathi Kit

The Sasya Ganapathi Kit, with the tagline of ‘What better can we ask of God when we have nature as a gift,’ contains a Ganapathi idol made of natural clay, potting mix and fertilizer, a UV stabilized square clay pot, a nutrient soil block that expands up to 10 litres of growing soil, any one of the three tomato/tulsi/bendi seeds and a detailed instruction manual. During Visarjan the Ganpati idol is dipped into the terracotta pot three times, thereafter which it dissolves. Next, the nutrient block is dropped which will expand within a few hours. Then the seeds are sown in an inch deep. And very soon, the Ganapathi idol will turn into a plant and stay with you forever.

“No matter how much you pray to god, good will only happen when you respect nature,” says Bharat. The team has sold more than a thousand Sasya Ganapathi kits this year and the bookings are now closed. One Sasya Ganpati kit costs INR 1500 inclusive of delivery charges in Bengaluru. The prices for outstation delivery, vary.
