How often have you been forced to attend a workshop or seminar, as part of your grade, or attendance, back in school? In most cases, because it was compulsory, you’d put on a long face, and try to find every possible way to ditch it without any repercussions. Failing which, you’d pay little to no attention in an act of defiance. Sound familiar? Yet, here’s a man who set an example for us all, in more ways than one when he put what he overheard at a seminar, to the test.
Head Constable Bajai Jagtap, was appointed to guard a school in Mumbai, during their board exams, when he came across a seminar on environmental awareness. Fascinated by the ideas put forward at the seminar, he spoke to his station’s senior inspector, and managed to put up Dahisar Police Station’s first ever composting unit. “It is simple and doable for every citizen of the country. They just have to decide to do something good,” he said, to the Hindustan Times.
Biodegradable waste generated by the police canteen, dry leaves, and flowers are all dumped into a compost box daily. Their compost box was set up by a NGO called Eco-ROX, under their project titled, Waste to Wealth. All the waste will be converted into organic manure, for the plants, after adding in bacterial culture provided by the NGO. Eco-ROX explained the process to the police officers, who are apparently keen on increasing the number of compost boxes around their station.
A simple seminar managed to make this police station set an example for the rest of our city. Moral of the story? Stay in school, kids. We’ve got a lot to learn.
