Mumbai, Learn To Fish At This Sustainable Farm Just Two Hours Away

Cara Shrivastava

For some of us, there’s a certain charm to living a quiet, farm life away from the city. Perhaps not 24/7, because the internet has taken us all hostage mentally, but sometimes, all you need is time to unplug, and maybe milk a cow. Okay, maybe not that, specifically, but if you want to go full farm hand, we’ve found the perfect little getaway located approximately two hours away from Mumbai.

From a bullock cart ride and a buffalo ride (an experience they say is their most unique feature), to a tour of the farm and the fish farm, Saguna Baug in Neral is a little sustainable paradise, set up in 1976. The family’s ‘agricultural project’ is open to suggestions, and even offers their own expertise to those interested in learning or participating in the farm activities. Surprisingly, they’ve got plenty of accommodation available — standard dormitories, to their most popular option ‘The Pond House.’ The house is quite literally situated in a pond, and is accessible via a small bridge.

A swim in the river is also an activity available for guests (which to us, sounds delightful after a day of toiling on their farm), with trained locals who make for your very own lifeguards. Even if you spend only a day at Saguna Baug, they promise you’ll take more back, than just peace of mind. They mean this physically too, as they provide their guests with options to take back fresh produce, or even dairy products, if available at the time.

So, Mumbai (or anyone else from wherever else), if you’d like to pack your bags and head there over a weekend, you can contact them here.
