A (Very Fine) Wine Guide To Mumbai

Payal Mohta

It’s a truth universally acknowledged (or at least should be by now) that there is no greater means of being blissfully intoxicated than by a bottle of wine. Having said that we also admit that this very truth can also cause multiple, irreparable and glaring holes in your wallet. If your financial condition cannot afford the pleasures of fine wine or brings you near states of homelessness as you try to please your inner wine demanding demon then this guide is your messiah. We have a list of bars that are in solidarity with your oenophilia while ensuring that you can still afford your meals for the month. Their special wine discounts offer a variety of your favourite domestic brands (no, we won’t try to feed you that vinegary port!) and if you aren’t a wine puritan then we also have vino’s frisky Spanish cousin Sangria and the other decadent relative Champagne on this budget friendly menu.

I. The Bombay Canteen

Where: Ground Floor, Process House, Kamala Mills, Near Radio Mirchi Office, S.B. Marg, Lower Parel

Offer: Unlimited Champagne

Time: Three hours from the time you get there, all through the week

You don’t always (or ever in our opinion) need an occasion to open a bottle of Champagne. Be it a casual lunch or mid-week blues, this restaurant will give you a bottomless glass of Chandon Brut a bubbly bliss of Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with hints of tropical fruits and vanilla. *clink, clink*

Price: INR 1500 for this decadent French baby.

II. Kettle And Keg

Where: Shop 1, Celeste Building, Plot 470, Kinchin CHS, 14th Road, Khar

Offer: Buy two glasses of sangria and get one free(This offer is also valid on other cocktails).

Nestled in a quiet corner, this cute tiny pub has a variety of in-house sangria options that are quite unlike anything you’d find anywhere else in Mumbai. Their wine menu is rich and diverse, allowing them to experiment with their sangrias in more innovative ways. The dry and zingy Sauvignon Blanc, the sweet pineapple and stone fruit flavoured Chenin Blanc and the fruity aromatic Riesling in white wines. In the reds they have the dry smooth berry flavoured Dindori Shiraz and the soft medium bodied Satori Merlot while in Rosé the very popular sweet Zinfandel with aromas of strawberry. The list of red wines also extends to two Nashik-based York wines, Arros- a mix of more shiraz and less cabernet that shows a spectacular range of flavours without being overwhelming on the palate and Cabernet Merlot with sweet aromas of cherries.

Price: INR 175 for a glass of sangria.

III. Mia Cucina

Where: G3, Transocean House, Lake Boulevard Street, Hiranandani Business Park, Powai,

Offer: Buy 2 glasses of wine and get one free. Offer applicable on domestic wine only.

Time: All day throughout the week

This pub with its discount on wine pints has the kind of attitude we like-why should beers have all the fun? In wine by the pint they have Grover Zampa’s, (a wine brand on top of all Indian wine lists) deep, full bodied ruby red wine Cabernet Sauvignon with notes of spices that leaves a lingering taste on your palate and the sweet, medium-bodied white wine Chenin Blanc with intense flavours of grapefruit, pineapple, guava and freshly cut herbs. We are already heading for this wine fiesta!
