Samyukhtha Sunil

As the end of June heralds a much-needed respite from the sweltering summer that was, we retreat to our comfort zones for the monsoon, with books, films or music that allows us to unwind and introspect. As it turns out, June has also turned out to be quite an exciting month in the Indie music arena. With a slew of new releases and new artists emerging in this space, here are our latest picks for your monsoon playlist.

I. Love Nobody by Chirag Todi (ft. Ramya Pothuri & RANJ)

Ahmedabad-based Chirag Todi is a songwriter and guitarist who has an illustrious history of working with legends such as A.R Rahman in the past. Through his latest release, Todi makes a foray into a track that is deeply intimate and explores the complex dynamics of a relationship that has just ended. The artist has collaborated with prominent names in the industry such as RANJ and Ramya Pothuri and a music video featuring dancer/choreographer Srilakshmi went live on the 24th of June.

II. Tapes by Owlist

Monsoons make the perfect for a day of unwinding with some lo-fi beats playing in the background. Jaipur-based producer Owlist has released his latest lo-fi track ‘Tapes’ which represents the nostalgia of a summer gone by. The track samples seagulls and some old-school grain over the artist’s signature jazzy boom-bap.

III. Aabad by Shaswat Bulusu

Producer, visual artist and songwriter Shaswat Bulusu makes his Hindi-debut with this dreamy EP ‘Aabad’. The A-side/B-side record currently features two tracks ‘Aabad’ and ‘Charkha’ that play out in the form of an inner monologue of questions and answers that the artist presents to the world. Bulusu brings together the subtle nuances of Hindi and English music to create an EP that is experimental and charming.
