The National Congress Party, on Monday, October 05, set up its first-ever LGBTQ Cell in Maharashtra. It claims to be the first political party in India to create a wing within its political framework to bring justice to the LGBTQI+ community.
The NCP is also the first party to set up the Yuvati (young women) cell, in an endeavor to make the party more inclusive of different groups and communities existing in the Indian society.
Maharashtra minister and state chief of the NCP, Jayant Patil, along with party MP Supriya Sule, announced the formation of this state and appointed transgender activist Priya G.Patil the state unit head for the cell.
This integration of the community with a national-level political party will give them a much-needed pedestal to voice their concerns. This also is an inclusive step forward to bridge the communication gap between the demands and concern of the community with the government.
In a press statement, MP Sule said: “We first established a cell for young women and now for the LGBT community. We are the country’s first party to do so. We don’t just pay lip service in speeches, we act.”
