The increasing trend of fast fashion is dangerous for the environment. The fashion industry’s changing ‘trends’ actively promote frequent wardrobe changes which give little importance to longevity, instead encouraging consumers to buy cheaper clothes that are then discarded for newer ones. Although in comparison to the rest of the world the growth of Eco-fashion in India is in its early stages, the country does have its fair share of brands coming up with innovative ideas to make sure sustainable fashion becomes a part of the Indian wardrobe. One such brand is Bamboo Tribe, founded by former IIM graduates Aiyappa Somayanda and Madhavi Das.

The founders of Bamboo Tribe met during their time working in the corporate world. After years in the industry, they gave up the good pay and stability to take the leap and chase their dream. “We slowly started becoming aware of our personal choices and their impact on our planet. So, we started making small conscious efforts to reduce unnecessary consumption, swapping in a better material where possible”, they tell us. Considering the huge amount of synthetic fabrics being worn today which have detrimental effects on the planet, they decided to produce clothes that are made from materials having a high durability that could help reduce the damage done by the former. They settled on using bamboo after coming to know about its beneficial qualities both for the environment and the consumers.

Bamboo fabric is naturally moisture-wicking, anti-odour and hypo-allergenic, which means it can replace your favourite kinds of materials and all that polyester gym wear. Bamboo Tribe’s promotion of bamboo products has also increased green cover in the country because of its cultivation. Their collection consists of comfortable t-shirts, tank tops, joggers and shorts in dark pastel shades suitable for daily wear. All products are designed in-house, paying special attention to the fit, the fabric and its chafe-free feel.

The founders of the brand were recently listed under the Most Inspiring Startup Entrepreneurs Under 40 by the New Indian Express. Having experience in E-commerce for a while now, they are looking to expand more into the area of in-store retail in the future. They have witnessed the amazement of customers on discovering their products and their ultimate adoption of a sustainable lifestyle has encouraged them to consider having their own store in the future.
