If the first wave of lineup announcements for Magnetic Fields 2016 wasn’t enough for you to book your ride into the desert palace of Alsisar, we’ve got news that will do the trick. This year’s lineup trumps every year gone by, and if you haven’t made it up to the desert as yet, we recommend you get on this sooner rather than later.
One of the artists gracing the decks this year is Superpoze, aka Gabriel Lageleux. He has managed to make a name for himself in the Caen electro scene, and has gone to play at festivals such as France’s Transmusicales and the Montreux Jazz Festival. His new sound focuses mainly on melody, and is a move away from the history of beatmaking, a genre important to him for so many years according to Resident Advisor. Magnetic Fields has consistently been a playground for experimental electronica, so naturally Howie Lee fits the glove, what with his bass-heavy sounds from the UK textured with Chinese melodies and sound profiles. Matias Aguayo is on the cards, known to use “his voice to slip into different roles and imitate sounds to creating an aural illusion. This allows him to use a handful of machines and a microphone, to creating sonic ambiguity between vocals and instrumentation” as described by Kompakt.
Helena Hauff is also on deck duty, who describes her sound as “rough, dirty, somewhat cold. Not always incredibly cold, but the mood is more coldly than warmly” as told to Kaput Mag. We’re digging this, especially with the desert cold to keep us company. Other international artists to look out for are The Buttering Trio, Honey Soundsystem, and Baris K, and Rinse France at the Desert Disco, to name a few.
Representing the home turf are some of our personal favourites. To top off the list, coming back harder from their set that closed Magnetic Fields 2015 is BLOT, multidisciplinary project helmed by Gaurav Malaker and Avinash Kumar, with the sole objective of creating alternative and experimental sound and visuals. Make sure to catch #HGArtist Zokhuma, Curtain Blue, Abhishek Bhatia’s solo electronica project, whose sound can be best described as Fusing haunting vocal melodies with down tempo and bass sensibilities when you’re looking for indigenous talent to tune your ears to. Also on the list are Abhimanyu Meer, FILM, and DJ OWAIS.
If you’re still debating, know that this lineup is a game changer as far as music festivals in India are concerned, and we wouldn’t miss this for anything.
