Tamil Nadu is now the proud owner of the world’s largest solar power plant. Built at Kamuthi in Ramanathapuram district in the span of eight months, the plant will produce 648 MW of electricity.
Adani Green Energy has made this project possible and it is being valued at Rs. 4,550 crores. 8500 workers were employed to complete the plant installing 11 MW of electricity per day for which the material was sourced from around the world. The Hindu Business Line reported that, ‘The massive plant comprises of 3,80, 000 foundations, 25,00,000 solar modules, 27,000 metric tonnes of structure, 576 inverters, 154 transformers and 6,000 km of cables. The entire 648 MW is now connected to the Kamuthi 400 KV substation of Tantransco, making it the world’s largest solar power plant in a single location.’ The plant has been set up on 5000 acres of land.
The state government had unveiled a plan to generate 3000 MW of electricity in 2012 after the government solar energy policy was unveiled in 2012. The company statement said that, ‘The entire 648-mw plant is now connected with Kamuthi 400 kv sub-station of Tantransco, making it the world’s largest solar unit at a single location,’ Economic Times reported.
Livemint reported the statement of Gautam Adani and said,“Calling it a “momentous occasion” for Tamil Nadu and the entire country, Gautam Adani, the billionaire chairman of Adani Group said a plant of this magnitude reinstates the country’s ambitions of becoming one of the leading green energy producers in the world. In a statement, he also thanked the chief minister and the government of Tamil Nadu “for their valuable support and guidance in achieving this gigantic feat”.The Adani group is also setting up another plant in Punjab which is pegged to be India’s largest tracker based PV solar project.
