Meghna Mathew

Esports in India have not gained as much traction compared to some other countries but that does not limit the immense passion of those who do partake in the new-age sport. Recent recognition of esports has been encouraging the youth to take it up and the growth has been enthusiastic to say the least.

In an exciting event, the Indian esports team secured their berths in the 2022 Commonwealth Esports Championships to be held in Birmingham in the first week of August. They performed exceptionally in the South Asian qualifiers for Rocket League and Dota 2.

The Rocket League team consisting of Nirjhar Mehta and Rushil Reddy Yarram was led by Hargun Singh and they won all three of their matches to secure their spot. Ketan Goyal, Abhishek Yadav, Shubham Goli, and Vishal Vernekar were captained by Moin Ejaz in the Dota 2 team, who were victorious in four of their six matches.

“My experience in the whole regional qualifiers so far has been an eye-opener with regards to how esports is expanding so quickly in regions like South Asia, especially in Rocket League. Considering how much potential there is, this regional event will help motivate the Rocket League community to participate in every competition and keep them motivated to improve in this game, seeking more opportunities to pursue esports events in general.”

Esports will be a pilot event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with hopes for it to become a full medal discipline event at the 2026 edition. The exponential attention paid to this sphere of digital and virtual sports is awe-worthy and opens up several avenues for them to be integrated into the mainstream.

Here’s wishing the Indian contingent the best of luck for their debut at the 2022 Commonwealth Esports Championships!
