The Homegrown Knitwear Label Making Headlines At London Fashion Week '22

Riya Sharma

The London Fashion Week is known for breaking the binary and inviting fashion that offers rich cultural commentary, creativity, and the quintessential London humour that the British fashion world is known for.

Charting the Indian fashion imprint at LFW’s DiscoveryLAB was Margn, a homegrown knitwear brand showcasing its Spring-Summer Collection ’22. Margn was one of fifteen global designers and the first Indian brand to be adjudged winner of a feature in the current edition by the British Fashion Council.

Ever since its inception, Margn has rapidly expanded its community and has been featured in multiple magazines such as GQ, Grazia, and Homegrown, to name a few. The brand was also among the top ten global finalists for Mr Porter Futures, London, 2021.

The collection showcased by the label focuses on a world on move and displacements becoming more painful than ever. Margn’s SS/FW-22 exemplifies the perilous journeys of immigrants, especially refugees and their trajectories of displacement, their suffering, need, and their courage to keep going on. This collection aims at sparking a conversation on whether borders and divisions precede being human.

The looks speak about protection and love, courage and community. A sense of freedom continues as tailoring and smaller details become messengers. Non-conforming silhouettes and layers are re-fashioned in the form of backless overshirts, alien-knits, and skirts with loops; taking a rebellious approach towards staples.

The collection vividly showcases intricate art techniques and avant-garde designs.

“I made a promise to myself since the beginning that every season, I will explore a previously undiscovered or unseen form of craft. For this collection, we chose ‘Chattai’ draped in various forms and structures with suspended human symbols to make conceptual pieces because it reminds me of sitting in the sun at home, feeling protected and having that feeling of being home.”
