Tradition, Meet Pop Culture: ‘The Saree Sneakers’ Makes Comfortable Footwear To Go With Ethnicwear

Meghna Mathew

If you have ever attended a big fat Indian wedding dressed in the customary lehenga or saree, accompanied by the obvious choice of high heels, you understand the kind of pinching, intense and constant pain that comes with it.

Solving this problem without putting your entire outfit and look in jeopardy is Shrutee Gupta’s ‘The Saree Sneakers’. As the name suggests, the brand creates impressive sneakers with designs, patterns, and colours to go perfectly with your Indian ethnic outfit. Gone are the days when heels were the only acceptable footwear with sarees!

Being a lover of fusion-wear herself, Shrutee wanted comfortable footwear for her own wedding but had failed to find anything appropriate. She says, “The first pair of sneakers was just something I did on my own sneakers. It was the birth of an idea that gave me so many possibilities. I wanted to involve local craftsmen and so, I started with the exploration of crafts such as Chikankari, Kantha, Zardozi and more.”

While Indian tradition calls for glimmery heels or into be mandatory at events such as weddings, The Saree Sneakers is all about comfort with style.

On being able to change people’s perspective on this, Shrutee says, “Indian weddings are all about dancing, drama, and lots of standing. Shoe bites and sore feet are the pain points of every desi girl after attending a wedding. It was not difficult for us because not only did our shoes look different, we were also solving their problem.”

The sneakers, however, are not limited to the idea of wearing with just heavy Indian attire. They may be paired with denim to create a whole new look!

“Our aim is always to provide shoes that one can use multiple times with multiple outfits. We try to keep the colour tones desi neutral (golds, silvers, reds, yellows) so one can use it with anything,” elaborates Shrutee.

If you ever needed an excuse to take off your heels at an event, The Saree Sneakers is your saviour. Making it possible for you to dance all night long with no pain or discomfort, these shoes, if you ask us, are revolutionary.
