A frequent complaint in men’s fashion is that their clothes lack originality. Masculine clothes can seem confined by specific cuts and styles, often leading to the (incorrect) conclusion that men’s fashion is boring. We get it; we’re also sick and tired of seeing plain hoodies and simple t-shirts everywhere we turn. That being said, not everyone wants to break boundaries or commit to a full avant-garde style with every look. This begs the question– how do we bridge that gap? What does it take to find a look that’s unique but still classic?
Kartik Research, a label we love here at Homegrown, has collaborated with the British heritage brand Baracuta to answer this question. Their latest collection brings vibrant patterns and rich Indian textiles to Baracuta’s signature silhouettes, creating pieces that are equal parts eccentric and accessible.
Baracuta’s G9 and G4 jackets first rose to popularity in the 1950s and 60s when they became staples in the closets of major stars like Elvis Presley and James Dean. Today, their famous shape and cut evoke a cool, suave masculinity; even if you’ve never heard of the brand’s name before, their recognisable style carries impact.
Kartik Research takes this iconic outerwear, and all the fashion history that comes with it, and revamps it with an Indian flair. The brand is committed to honouring Indian artisans, which they accomplish through both aesthetics and craftsmanship in their new collection.
Firstly, Gujurati Godadhi artisans use their traditional skills from making upcycled patchwork blankets to hand-quilt the body of their jackets. Weavers in Himachal use handloom techniques to reimagine the G9 and G4’s signature tartan checks, and, to top it off, Zardozi craftsmen elevate the jacket with their intricate embroidery, creating a final product unlike any other on the market.
The Kartik Research x Baracuta collaboration features six items: three jackets, a hoodie, an embellished pair of trousers, and a handloom shirt. While the jackets are, of course, standout items, their other pieces offer a subtle whimsy to your wardrobe. Their designs may not be as immediately eye-catching, but they’re an elegant opportunity to spice up your look.
Kartik Research describes these pieces, with their loud paisley patterns and bright colours, as “intentionally chaotic” to capture the essence of Delhi. Like our capital, their clothes are culturally rich and unafraid, slightly audacious but undeniably striking. They’re proof that men’s fashion can be bold while remaining classic. Our culture is so spirited, and our traditional wear is globally known for its glamour and vibrancy. Why shouldn’t our daily style be the same?
