Artist In Focus : S Elayaraja

Admin

S Elayaraja uses his photographs as a source of reference to create definitive and detailed compositions that border on the narrative. He renders his subjects in a visual language of hyper-realism, creating an effect that seems to extend into the viewer"s space. Objects and scenes are meticulously detailed to create the illusion of a new reality not evident in the photograph. Since the illusion itself is a convincing depiction of a simulated reality, textures, surfaces, lighting effects and shadows are painted to appear clearer and more distinct than the actual subject itself. a defining element of his compositions is the use of light to give dramatic effect. it is interesting to note that Hyper-realism in the 1970s derived from trompe l"oeil, which in turn dates back to classical Greek antiquity. This complex technique accomplishes a three-dimensional field and continues to fascinate contemporary artists and viewers alike.
