Vaaswat Sarkar

Do you love it when you feel the adrenaline pumping through your veins? Are you a thrill-seeker? Is vertigo an alien word to you? Then we have got the perfect activity for you — death diving. It is a form of extreme freestyle diving from heights. Death diving involves jumping with stretched arms and belly first, landing in a cannonball or a fetal position. This extreme activity originates in Norway, where it is called Dodsing, and the Norwegians have forever dominated this sport. Death Diving World Championships are held every year in Oslo, since its inception in 2008.

There are two kinds of death diving: Classic and Freestyle. In the Classic event, competitors fly horizontally with their arms and legs outstretched until they hit the water, with no rotations. Competitors curl into a shrimp-like position just before entering the water, landing first with their feet and hands or knees and elbows to avoid serious injury. Dives are judged based on speed, air time, complexity, diver’s poise, closing, and splash. In Freestyle, the competitors do a variety of tricks during air travel, including rotations and flips. The current world record in jumping height is 31.3 meters and is held by three Norwegian athletes.

Recently the popularity of death diving has skyrocketed thanks to TikTok trends. TikTok is generally known for beauty and fitness trends, but something unexpected and unconventional like death diving is gaining quite the popularity. This dangerous trend is being practiced by many all over the world, and they are sharing their experiences on Youtube, TikTok, and other social media platforms. Videos of people jumping from heights into blue waters have gone viral. However, do not be confused by the name. The people participating in it don’t really have a “death” wish. Even though it is a seemingly dangerous sport and most of the divers are professional athletes, you can also participate with proper training and supervision.

In India, there are several picturesque places to experience this extreme adventure sport safely. It is conducted primarily at the top cliff diving spots in the country:

I. Pentagon Lava Cliff at St. Mary's Island in Karnataka

II. Rock quarry 20 kilometers north of Pondicherry

III. Bicholim, Goa

IV. Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

V. Marble Rock site at Bedhaghat in Madhya Pradesh
