Indian Photoseries ‘Men In Skirts’ Has A Message For You - Wear Whatever You Want

Meghna Mathew

Since the inception of time, gender binaries have had their way — with their expectations, boxed mindsets, and overarching themes of ‘masculine men and feminine women’. The orthodox ideas of what an individual should be and express themselves as plague us even in 2020.

‘Men In Skirts’ is a photo series that proves exactly otherwise. Photographed by Sristi Dey, with models Ashim Das and Swarna Bhattacharjee, the project slashes the idea that only women belong in skirts — it proudly shows a male-identifying individual donned in a beyond adorable skirt.

“We, as individuals should dress to express ourselves and not come under any oppression from societal standards of masculinity & femininity,” said the team.

Garments are simply a piece of cloth — so, why is it that certain garments are labelled as ‘feminine’, and others as ‘masculine’? Essentially, garments must remain gender-neutral with the individual deciding for themselves what they feel best in — that is exactly what ‘Men In Skirts’ aims to convey, and we’re here for it!
