Mindy Kaling Is Auditioning South Asian Females For Her Upcoming Netflix Show

Homegrown Staff

In March this year, Mindy Kaling took to twitter to announce her upcoming Netflix show : a semi autobiographical coming of age comedy revolving around a modern-day first generation Indian American girl. And earlier today, she made an Instagram post to announce that she is auditioning South Asian females for it!

Mindy Kaling, who’s actual name is Vera Mindy Chokalingam, is an American actress, comedian, writer, and producer. Over the years she has garnered a lot of attention for her roles in the likes of The Office and The Mindy Kaling show. But more importantly, she has been a pioneer in diversity by bringing the South Asian female narratives in the American entertainment landscape.

With regards to her upcoming show she says, “I wasn’t as interested in telling a period piece about an Indian girl growing up in the ’80s, but I told [Netflix] I’d love to do a show about a 15 year old Indian girl now.” And for that she is auditioning actors for roles of 15-18 year old South Asian American Female, a mid 40’s South Asian female with an Indian accent and a mid 20’s South Asian female with an Indian accent. This show clearly seems to be a great way of representing females of colour. With the likes of Lilly Singh having her late night show on NBC, things do look great for South Asian artists in the coming year.
