The First Design Fabric Festival Is Bringing Together The Indian Art World

Shireen Jamooji

Over the last few years, India’s art and design community has had a lot to take in. The sector has seen amazing growth, public support and exposure with this March bringing a new and exciting opportunity to immerse yourself in creations by some of the world’s best artists. On the weekend of the 29th Famous Studios in Mahalaxmi, Mumbai will play host to the first ever edition of the Design Fabric Festival (DFF) presented by Asian Paints. This three day exhibition will feature 30 local and international artists from all facets of the design community. Aside from dedicated art exhibitions, there will be a series of engaging talks by industry leaders, artist-led workshops, panel discussions and after parties, a truly immersive experience of Indian art.

DFF aims to facilitate a more rapid rise of the Indian design industry to match global standards by developing a close-knit community of students, professionals and enthusiasts from across different disciplines of art and design. Design Fabric itself was only established as an online platform in February 2017 but in the year since it’s seen a meteoric rise in popularity and today has collaborated with over 150 Indian artists and become one of the most respected names in the design fraternity.

They also believe in fostering the younger generation and in this debut edition they’ll be bringing a diverse range of international and local speakers to educate and inspire the attendees. Among the many notable names on the line up are illustrator Christoph Niemann, Ruchika Sachdeva of Bodice, author and renowned artist Adam J. Kurtz, graphic designer Anthony Burrill, fashion illustrator of @paperfashion Katie Rodgers, design thinker V. Sunil of Make in India, Mitch Paone of NYC-based DIA Studios, Berlin-based CATK design studio, cartoonist and designer Orijit Sen and textile artist Sarah Naqvi.

Whether you have a passion for Graphic Storytelling or Ethical Fashion, there are opportunities to explore many avenues of the design process. “At the festival, you will be able to attend work presentations, journeys, discussions by our very own design superstars along with those from around the world. And also enjoy visual experiences at partner exhibits and after parties around Mumbai. It’s going to be one big celebration of our exploding design scene in India.” says Avlani. This promises to be a new milestone for India’s burgeoning art festival culture and a truly unmissable experience.
