Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, Anupam Kher & More Get Invited To Be Oscar Academy Members

Awards for artistic and technical merit in the global film industry, the Academy Awards or The Oscars have held a prestigious space in the pop-culture realm ever since it’s conception. From the speeches and the winners, to the hosts and the snubs, the Oscars have given so many beloved moments to its fraternity of fans across the world, especially in a film obsessed country like India. Well, fans from our country are in for a treat as the Academy Awards have done something special to strengthen its connection with India.

Some prominent names like Anupam Kher, Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap and Ritesh Batra have been invited to be a members of the Oscar Academy. A list released on Monday, represents a rather vital step by the organisation to foster representation from all corners of the world in order to become more inclusive fraternity.

Right off the success of Gully Boy, Zoya Akhtar has been invited in the director’s category, while Anurag Kashyap has been invited in the Short Films and Feature Animation category. In the Visual Effects department, Sherry Bharda of ‘Hichki’ fame and Srinivas Mohan, best known for his work on ‘2.0’ and ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’, have been invited as well.

The overall members of people of colour now constitutes 29% of the total invitees and half of the members invited from the 59 countries are women. This is a great step for representation and inclusivity and definitely a milestone for the Indian film community.
