Earlier this month, the World Health Organisation (WHO) released a report stating that India had grossly misrepresented the Covid deaths, reporting that India’s true toll was believed to be much higher than the official estimates. This comes as no surprise especially since the country’s media is at a point where it is either under obligation to report in favour of the government or to face challenges like lawsuits and a lack of funding. All of this though does not take away from the fact that some journalists continue to put themselves at the forefront of journalistic integrity and cover stories that truly matter.

On Monday, 9 May 2022, the Pulitzer Prize for the year 2022 in the fields of journalism, books, drama, and accompaniment were announced and included four photographers —— all of them Indian journalists. The four photojournalists were awarded the Pulitzer in the field of feature journalism for their exemplary work in covering the coronavirus outbreak in the country. Their photographs were the perfect example of being both lifelike and journalistic and gave an accurate analysis of the devastation that the second wave of the virus caused in the country.

The photojournalists who were awarded the Pulitzer include Adnan Abidi, Amit Dave and Kashmiri journalist Sana Irshad Mattoo along with news agency Reuters’ late photojournalist Danish Siddiqui, killed in Afghanistan while covering a conflict, who was awarded the Pulitzer posthumously.
