This Sustainable Farmhouse Near Delhi Is An Ode To Nature

They say that the key to good design is capturing the spirit of the client and the essence of the space and the Chattarpur Farmhouse located in the outskirts of Delhi amidst a lush green environment is a beautiful example of natural and architectural elements coming together to create something stunning.

Founder of the Delhi Design Store, Monica Khanna is a reputed interior designer who has previously designed two luxury trains. Her latest project, the Chattarpur farm house has an earthy wooden décor with simple, rustic interiors that incorporate Sri Lankan, Mediterranean and Thai design elements. Old wicker chairs, a large mirror in the foyer lend this otherwise minimalist house an old-world charm. The house has no bedrooms but alternatively has a quiet spa room, a cosy reading room and a meditating room. There is also an airy informal sitting room with large windows that serves as the sun room during the winters.

Most windows here do not have curtains, but motorized blinds. The key concept given to the team was for the client to be up close and personal with nature, to be able to wake up to the chirping of birds and see the peacocks dancing and the farmhouse fulfills this completely. All bathrooms open to little private gardens. Amidst the leafy outdoors are two water bodies: a swimming pool with a lovely wooden deck and a splendid little lily pond. “We kept the interiors very simple so that the exteriors would be the focal point” Monica Khanna told this source.

While the feel of the farmhouse is minimalist, it encapsulates all mod cons and encourages sustainability. The most important element of the house is the zinc roof. Zinc is one of those materials that can last for over a 100 year and does not catch rust. All the wood used is reusable. Toxic products like lacquer for polishing have been avoided. The paints used are also very low on VOC.

“Only if our environment is healthy we can have a better quality of life,” says Monica Khanna. The stunning farm house nestled in the lap of nature ensures just that.
