“As much as I would love to make sneakers for a brand like Nike, adidas, Under Armour, etc., I would at some point of time, like to create my own low volume manufacturing brand which makes exclusive and hyped sneakers. My goal is to use biomimetic inspirations in footwear, not just for looks, but for functional purposes as well.”

To most this may seem like a rather far-fetched dream, but one look at 20-year-old Saurav Shete’s futuristic sneaker designs and you’d be sold. Currently an Industrial Design student from National Institute of Design, Saurav has been rather enterprising when it comes to his own projects. A dreamer at heart, he talks about why sneakers became his latest obsession, “There wasn’t one single idea that spawned this entire lineup of sneakers, to be honest. I got into the zone of sneaker designing last year, when I was trying to find new outlets for my specific skill set. For me, footwear, or rather, sneakers, made a lot of sense for the combination of art, technology, logic, material science and storytelling they had to offer.”

The collection was a side effect of a 21 Day Challenge Saurav was taking part in, titled ‘21 Days Of Design’ by Pensole Academy in America. While the rest of his collection of designs takes inspiration from DC comic villains, Japan, reptiles, and more, our personal favourite theme has to be his ‘Racing Meets Streetstyle’ series. “Inspired by the work of legendary Japan based Porsche supercar tuning house Rauh Welt Begriff (RWB) founded by Akira Nakai San, this range of sneakers brings RWB’s aesthetic to the contemporary streetwear scene,” he mentions in a note on the series.

The series features three concepts: The LowKnit (low top sneaker featuring a knit upper and a 3D printed cage), The LowRider (low top sneaker featuring a synthetic upper with leather sections and a forefoot cage), and The HighBaller (high top sneaker featuring a knit upper and a 3D printed cage).

“I wish to continue in this field of sneaker design and begin my career with a job related to it. Later on, I may switch, but that’s a long way off,” he says, on a final note.
