Ruskin Bond’s thrilling, emotional and captivating stories have shaped so much of contemporary Indian literature and are adored by people around the world. His prolific writing and deeply creative mind shine through particularly in his ghost stories – which are hauntingly simple and thoughtful. Now they will come to life – literally – in what promises to be a visually stunning web adaption of four of his favourite ghost stories. Set in northern hill stations inspired by Bond’s childhood, the show, titled Parchayee: Ghost Stories By Ruskin Bond, will be aired on ZEE5 starting today, January 15, 2019. The stories featured are The Ghost In The Garden, The Wind On Haunted Hill, Wilson’s Bridge and The Overcoat and will directed by the award-winning duo, V.K. Prakash and Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury.
Bond’s fascination with ghosts has been a recurrent theme in his life and in his writing. Although he has said he has never seen a ghost, he is inspired by the riveting stories he read as a child and those passed on to him by friends and family. He will be involved in the making of Parchayee as well, since the original stories were in short form and intended for magazine or editorial publication. To develop it for video, they will be built out further while maintaining Bond’s charm and imagination. Two of his other stories – Susanna’s Seven Husbands and A Flight of Pigeons – were made into big-budget Bollywood films as well, Saat Khoon Maaf and Junoon respectively.
