Even though a hub for cultural exchange and multi-cuisine gastronomy, Pune has always maintained and held pride in its age-old but classic food items, which have been served in the city for ages together. Bedekar Misal

Even though an originally Kolhapuri dish, people from all over Maharashtra come to Bedekar Misal to enjoy the special item. A mixture of poha, onion, tomatoes, curry and farsaan, misal is every Punekars favourite breakfast item. This is a small shop, in a lane, but the amount of people waiting to have this, manages to block the entire lane, especially on Sundays. Make sure to not leave the city without enjoying this spicy but tangy delicacy.

Café Goodluck

A great place for meal anytime, this cafeteria has literally seen India and the city of Pune transform. Running since the pre-independence era, this is all-time favourite for every localite and is indeed one of the most recommended places. Do have their bun-maska, double omelette, mutton kheema samosa, chicken lollipop, caramel pudding and their speciality, the irani chai!

Serving one of the best kathi rolls in the city, one must visit this place. Paratha laced with beaten eggs, a generous heap of spicy chicken is loaded, with sliced onions and lemon. Then it is rolled and served with pudina chutney for that amazing taste.

Appa chi Khichadi, as the name suggests, serves the most delicious Sabudana Khichadi in the city. They serve it with Dahi Kakdi, a mixture of shredded cucumber, curd and crushed groundnut. The spicy khichadi and cold dahi kakdi just give the perfect taste and blend in the mouth. Also their Sabudana wadas are crispy, less fried and very yummy.

This place has always captivated food lovers around the city since the past six decades. They are known for their legendary chutney-sandwich. Also, a must try is the chicken sandwich, which has shredded chicken and a little sweet taste along with its delicious cold coffee.

Blue Nile

If you crave for great chicken and mutton biryani, kebabs, some delicious nonveg curries, head to this restaurant. Serving the city for almost 4-5 decades now, it is a go to place for enjoying great meat. The kebabs are so well-cooked that the meat melts in your mouth. Perfectly flavoured, the biryani is made with one of the finest basmati rice.

Sujata Mastani

Mastani, a so ‘Puneri’ dessert, is every Punekars late night relish. Always packed with people, Sujata Mastani has been in the city for a very long time. situated in the heart of the city, it is a mixture of ice-cream topped on a thick shake of the same flavour. Do try their sitaphal mastani, mango mastani and chickoo mastani (all are seasonal). They also serve a variety of ice-creams and milkshakes.

Sp’s Biryani

One of the best biryanis in the city, their speciality is that they make the biryanis and the meat in pure ghee. Mildly spicy with succulent, tender and well-marinated meat chunks, the flavour of the pure ghee, or ‘sajook tup’ as they call it, that seeps every rice grain and meat, adds a different and incredible flavour to the biryani. A must try.

Shreyas Thali

If you want to taste an authentic, Puneri vegetarian thali, head to Shreyas Thali. It has been serving delicacies to the city for the past 2- decades. It is always crowded, especially on Sundays, as they serve their special menu. A little sweetish taste to everything, the typical Maharashtrian tinge in found in everything. Do try their Shrikhand- Puri with other items like varan-bhaat (dal and rice), masala bhaat, chapati, bhaji (pakoda), 2-3 vegetable curries and some sweet.

Zaika

Spice specialists, Zaika is one of the rarest brands which serve delicious, home-made spice ice-creams. The ice-creams are made by the people at their own place, adding that original flavour, without artificial flavours, colours and with good quality whole milk. A must try is their clove cinnamon ice-cream, gulkand ice- cream and saffron ice-cream.

Nisarg

Head to Nisarg if you are looking for great Malvani seafood. From a variety of seafood thalis, they serve one of the best seafood starters. And their marked feature is that they show the fish to their customers before cooking, especially crabs, to show the fact that they serve fresh fish to their customers. A must try is their butter garlic crab, fish fry, bombil fry, tisrya (clamps) and prawns curry.

A very old place in the city, it is indeed the best for sizzlers. They serve sizzlers with home-made fries, fresh meat and vegetables, well-cooked rice and meat and yummy home-made sauces. A must try is the Piri Piri Chicken Sizzler and Chicken Shashlik Sizzler.

Amruteshwar

It opens at 3 am in the morning, serving the favourite Puneri breakfast: pohe. So for the post-midnight nocturnal animals who crave for snacks, it’s the right place. Early morning one will find newspaper delivery boys, postmen, bus conductors, having their early breakfast before heading to their work. It is a thrill for the local youngsters to stay awake late, just to eat at this place.

Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale

The go-to sweet mart, Chitale lives in every Punekars heart. To gift food to people, to send it across the seven seas, carry it for relatives living outside Pune, it is customary to go to Chitale. From ladoos, chiwada, balushahi, bombay halwa, jalebi, etc., their most special is the bakarwadi and amba barfi. During festivals, it is so full that one hardly has place to stand. Do take back some home!

Budhani wafers

Started way back in 1955, this iconic wafer company has a variety of chips, always low on salt and soil. The best flavours are tomato and cheese and cream and onion. Don’t forget to pack back loads of them, because your tongue cannot suffice in one.

Jagannath Pan

Lazy Sunday afternoons, especially after a heavy lunch always demand for a pan in every Puneri household. And one famous and trusted place is Jagannath Pan. It serves coloured and long shredded coconut strips and small chocolate chips, and the pan topped with sugar-coated jelly with every pan. Array of pan variants is found at this place, all equally delicious and wanting.
