Netflix's 'Street Food' Pays A Delicious Tribute To Delhi's World Of Kebabs, Chaat & More

The last weekend of April comes with its own set of treats: the Avengers Endgame movie released on Friday, Taylor Swift dropped a new music video and – perfect for a weekend binge – Netflix released “Street Food”, a food docu-series that captures the culture of street food from several cities around the world.

Street Food, a show from the makers of ‘Chef’s Table’ – another Netflix favourite – dedicates each episode to the story of a city’s street food. From Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to Yogyakarta in Indonesia, each episode builds a beautiful story around the city’s most loved street food and the history behind it. Like Chef’s Table, the show draws focus to not only the food, but also the people who make it. More often than not, small shops that line the streets of a busy city are built on a history of family struggle – and this Netflix original shows it like it is.

Why should you watch it? Perhaps one of the few of its kind, this show strays away from the usual, commonplace practice of documenting mainstream cuisines of the west and delves into the unexplored: South Asian Cuisine. What’s more: there’s an entire episode dedicated to the street food of Delhi! Putting a unique lens on the colourful culture of Delhi Street food, the episode takes you through the journey of some of the most famous street eateries of Delhi. From Delhi’s delectable chaat to kebabs that carry the Mughal legacy, Street Food presents an appetizing array of the dishes that we love – and that the rest of the world can now take note of.

Street food is an inseparable part of the Indian cuisine. While it is the face of fusion, of fast and convenient food, it also tells the story of how certain aspects of history shaped the street food of a city. This is exactly what the show does - it tells the story of how the city and the food are connected, to the point that it is difficult to distinguish one from the other. Check out ‘Street Food’ to get a taste of Delhi, Indonesia, Singapore and more!
