Tucked away, untouched and little heard of: Khirsu, a quaint hilltop town in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand is one of Himalayas’ most beautiful gifts to India. Khirsu garners little tourism to its beautiful landscape – perhaps in its sparse hotels and difficult-to-find location, Khirsu is modest in its disinterest in catering to tourists. While Khirsu offers beautiful summers of apple orchards and snowy winters with the view of the Himalayas, one its best-kept secrets is the rural culture of the town. Unique in its materials and techniques of building and farming, Khirsu is home to a hardworking people. This summer, Compartment S4 gives you the opportunity to engage with the people and the practices of Khirsu with the Hand-Made Workshop.

Hand-Made is a workshop series conducted by Compartment S4 from 3rd June to 15th June this summer. This workshop focuses on ‘learning by doing’. In their own words, these workshops are a medium for experimenting with local materials and techniques for building, while making sure to create valuable interventions in rural and other community-based areas. This workshop looks at extending two objectives: one – to implement smart and sustainable design to rural projects, and two, engaging people of the community to create a sense of belonging. This year’s edition of the Hand-Made Workshop takes you to Khirsu, where you will build a homestay that will be run by Self Help Groups in the area. As a participant of this workshop, you will experiment with local materials and techniques, while at the same time attributing a more sustainable approach to the practices that are already in place. In fact, every Compartment S4 workshops looks at interspersing sustainability with a hands-on experience. Mallika Gupta,a student of CEPT University who attended the Hand-Made workshop in Khadki last year, recalls her experience with enthusiasm. “The experience is not just about building a structure,” she says, “but also about understanding the balance between design and labour on the field.”

In many regions like Khirsu, there is a tangible gap between the local handicraft produced and the generation of economy. The Hand-Made workshop looks to bridge this gap. Spend your summer learning and contributing to the infrastructure and economy of Khirsu – the breathtaking view is only a bonus.
