Well, there’s no denial that climate change is one of our generation’s most dire and pressing issue. While things do seam bleak with regards to the general apathy of government bodies to this urgent issue, people across the world have taken upon themselves to make things right. And a proud moment for us as a country, is that we are definitely doing something right.
A recent study by NASA suggests that India along with China is responsible for the greening of our planet. Earth’s green foliage has increased by over two million square miles or 5%, which is largely contributed by the agriculture and planting efforts by the two countries. India has contributed a 6.8% rise in green leaf area, with 82% from croplands and 4.4% from forests.
Rama Nemani, a co-author of the study and a researcher at NASA’s Ames Research Center, said in a statement, “Once people realise there’s a problem, they tend to fix it. In the ‘70s and ‘80s in India and China, the situation around vegetation loss wasn’t good. In the ‘90s, people realised it. And today things have improved. Humans are incredibly resilient. That’s what we see in the satellite data.”
While researchers suggest that the new greenery does not necessarily neutralise deforestation and its negative impacts on ecosystems, it still seems like a step in the right direction. The world is literally a greener place than it was 20 years ago, and to think our country has got something to do with it, that’s likely to instil hope in people contributing to make our planet greener.
