Quarantine stands for the forbidden and while a lot of things like the economy, the stock market, people’s businesses and hopes and moods are going down, the only thing that seems to be spiking is the PornHub daily traffic rate. Apparently, self-quarantine goes very well with erotica, and since your gentle seneschal Homegrown listens to and addresses all your unsaid desires, we asked our in-house expert, Director and Film-writer Sonam Nair to draw a list of some of the steamiest erotic movies there are for you to curl up and Netflix and chill with your Funny Valen … err … Quarantine or just yourself!
What needs to be remembered, Sonam says, is that these films are not porn. There are other outlets for that. “These are artistic, beautiful, sexual films,” she adds.
Shame (2011)
Sonam says, “Some of the sexual unreturns in the film are almost uncomfortable but the film creeps into you. It’s about a sex addict played by Michael Fassbender and he keeps running in the movie with his shirt off and that in itself is quite a scene.” Directed by Steve McQueen, this film is about a sex addict whose carefully cultivated private life falls apart after his sister arrives for an indefinite stay.
“The sex scenes are fine, but they have a sexual tension in it which is very exclusive. It makes you curious. It’s the kind of film you can watch when alone in the house,” she adds. Catch the trailer here.
The Other Boleyn Girl (2008)
“Set in the 1500s in England, this grand erotic film with big stars is larger than life at the outset, but at its heart, it’s a simple story about two sisters vying for the same man’s attention and love.” Directed by Justin Chadwick and starring Hollywood biggies like Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, this film is the tale of two sisters and their involvement with King Henry VIII of England. “It’s also very scandalous for being a grand period film. The star cast makes it beautiful to watch,” Sonam continues. You can Netflix it here.
The Dreamers (2003)
A young American studying in Paris in 1968 strikes up a friendship with a French brother and sister. Set against the background of the ‘68 Paris student riots, this film takes us through some unusual desires. About the film, Sonam says, “It’s weird that the three protagonists are also stuck within a beautiful house alone. Based in the Paris of the 1960s, the film has a gorgeous setting. It’s very bold for the time it depicts.” Watch the trailer here.
Call Me By Your Name (2017)
Directed by Luca Guadagnino, Call Me by Your Name is the final installment in a thematic trilogy Guadagnino calls his “Desire” trilogy; the other two parts were I Am Love (2009) and A Bigger Splash (2015). “It has Timothée Chalamet and he can cheer us all up during these times. Also, it has a really beautiful Italy and now that the coronavirus has ravaged Italy, it’s beautiful to see Italy in the glorious summer with these two gorgeous men falling in love with each other.” Watch the trailer here.
Lust, Caution (2007)
“Again a very large-scale period film.” Directed by Ang Lee, this film is set in the World War II-era wherein a young woman, Wang Jiazhi, gets swept up in a dangerous game of emotional intrigue with a powerful political figure, Mr. Yee. Sonam goes, “There’s a lot of forbidden sexual feelings in it and it’s also very graphic but very beautiful.” You can watch it here.
