A list of illustrators who are based out of Hyderabad and are continuously shifting the dynamics of pan-Indian art which has multiple sources of inspiration from western TV shows to their own lived experience.
Priyatham is a Hyderabadi freelance illustrator and artist who shot to prominence through Netflix’s contests after his re-creation of a Stranger Things episode titled ‘Dig Dug’ where he draws the character of chief Hopper in the throes of his investigation. Priyatham’s sketches revolve around pop culture icon’s such as Bong Joon-Ho, Salman Rushdie, and the infamous Cersei Lannister. Moreover, his art delves deeper, from his ink-based caricatures which exude grittily detail-oriented dimensions to his series on animals in the wild.
II. Bhargavi R
A cartoonist at pijicomics, Bhargavi uses ephemeral colours like light orange and ocean blue-green with swishes of watercolour and soft straight lines to accentuate form and wonder for the world. Her quirkier pieces of art such as a dragon or a small comic about a peanut going to the beach swell with a sense of comfort.
III. Manali Malviya
An art and comics illustrator Manali creates humorous shots of stories from her own life, she also illustrates comics around queer pride and love. Her comics on gender stereotyping and love is showcased in her short earlier illustrations.
Dorcas is a mandala artist as well as an illustrator who focuses on vector graphic design and pattern illustrations. Her more prominent pieces of illustrations are of Brooklyn 99 characters where she captures the actor’s silhouette in their most character-defining scenes. Her series on publishing house icons are simple designs that help her derive consistency to her ever-evolving style.
Illustrating conceptual art with the intent for it to become a part of a larger animation is what Sahil specialises in. Sahil is a visual artist as well as an illustrator. Deeply embedded in vibrant colours that fully gloss over fictional environments much like a video game or an animated movie, Sahil’s art uniquely captures a variety of visual compositions.
