Normalising all types of women’s bodies continues to be a long-drawn battle. On an everyday basis, women are told that something or the other about their body is ‘not correct’. That being said, the hustle never stops. Each day, we are fortunate to see a new and innovative (at the least) way to tackle this stigma. It is no surprise that art remains a powerful tool to put the point across, but one of it forms we might have been sleeping over is pottery.
Earlier this year on Woman’s Day (March 08), Nikita Dawar, founder of Slow Pottery released a glimpse of Boob Mugs. As outlandish as it may sound, the motivation behind it is just as beautiful.
As she mentioned on her Instagram page, she believes that these mugs stand for freedom, rebellion, inclusivity, and most importantly, love. While she couldn’t have said it better herself, we believe the love radiated by these awe-worthy mugs could be extended to yourself, your not-so-pleasant relationship with your own body or even to someone else fraying through the same. The absence of a flat stomach and defining ab lines make the mugs all the more real, raw and in our opinion, perfect.
The Boob Mugs are available in a range of appearances. In shades apart from the stereotypical
‘skin colour’ and in shapes that show off a bulging belly, Nikita Dawar seems to have done her best to represent all kinds of women. Soon after she started making these mugs, she shared a picture of a Boob Mug that was cracked. ‘Defected’ as many would describe it, the mug, in effect, does more to clarify the beauty in everything we are made to believe are flaws. A woman’s cracks make her stronger and encapsulate her real self.
Nikita has mentioned that her inspiration for this series came from wanting to set breasts free through a straightforward interpretation of them. She has definitely done that, and how! Introducing them in a daily-use item is a genius way to have important (maybe uncomfortable) conversations and pave the way for letting breasts be no more than a woman’s body – a body that must be respected and loved, not in parts, but as a whole.
Call it whacky, quirky or even weird, but Boob Mugs definitely seem to be working their charm, given that they fly off the shelves as soon as they are placed there.
