Urban Ecologist by day and musician otherwise, Aditi Veena aka Ditty is known for being a conscientious artist. Her debut album ‘Poetry Ceylon’ is a testament to her existence as a musician who continues to remind us that art is in fact political like it should be and like it always has been. An advocate for climate change and sustainable practices, Ditty continues to use her platform to spread awareness and raise concerns about the environment. Her latest venture Faraway Friends with David Raddish from Austria and Keno Langbein from Germany in collaboration with Viva con Agua – an NGO promoting the human right to water – is another step in this direction.
Their first single Jal Saheli (Friends of Water) from the album Rain Is Coming sets the tone and the precedent for the rest of the album that probes into collective human efforts of conservation featuring the women of Bundelkhand as well as into the sonic experience of the magnificence of life tied with water. “You will hear water running through the whole production and the original voices of the people that inspired us!” adds Ditty.
The single is part documentary and part an effort to add sonic perspectives. Released on 13 November 2020, the song seems like an ode to the human scale efforts of water harvesting. Ditty’s calming voice along with the chants of local activists set to the backdrop of water samples collected during the outreach programmes only adds to the magnificence of the single.
