10 Food Initiatives Aiding COVID Relief In India

As the pandemic hits us with full force, food becomes a dire community and a privileged resource for many. However, braving the COVID travesty selflessly are many pioneers of the hospitality industry, an avenue that has taken a hard hit as well.

Responding to the dire call for help is a milieu of chefs and restauranteurs around the country who are joining hands to generate funds for COVID relief, provide resources and run COVID kitchens.

Homegrown brings you a list of initiatives and food avenues working towards providing food for the cause-

I. COVIDMEALSINDIA

Determined to be offer his utmost help in feeding people, Saransh Goila from @Goilabutterchicken has come up with a pan-India tech solution that links patients and families to families to home chefs and cooks. With the help of the folks behind the tech platform Fastor, CovidMealsIndia now functions as a marketplace where a location-wise search throws up a list of local service providers with their WhatsApp details. Those in need can directly forward requests to the inboxes of these cooks to work out meal and delivery logistics. Over five days, the initiative has onboarded about 2,500 service providers across 52 cities. Delivery platforms Swiggy and Dunzo have reached out to help ferry meals, and even WhatsApp has reached out to help them streamline the tech behind the website. Apart from metros like Delhi and Mumbai, smaller cities like Mysuru and Leh have representation on the site too says CNN traveller.

II. FIG AND MAPLE

Bearing the brunt of covid that shut down their restaurant named fig and maple, Radhika Khandelwal and Ravish Bhavani continue their effort of feeding people in Delhi. Their meal service aims at helping out those in need and is free of cost, through one can choose to pay or donate to their food programme that switches menus every week. The duo are now stepping forward to help other chefs to set up their own relief resources and help the community.

III. MASSIVE RESTAURANTS

Zorawar Kalra from Massive Restaurants is another restaurant owner committed to offering nutritious meals to COVID afflicted people and families all across Delhi NCR from 12:30 to 6:30 pm every day.

IV. NEENA’S KITCHEN

All-vegetarian meals featuring North Indian and Gujarati fare can be customised at the Goregaon-based home kitchen, which whips up nutritious food. If your household has kids, the regular dal, sabzi, and roti, might not suffice which is why they also make pizzas, garlic bread, sandwiches, and other dishes. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals are available, with a traditional lunch being the most common.They usually provide lunches only at the minimal cost of Rs 200.

V. Thatthalasserygirl

Marina Balakrishan from Ootupura, Mumbai has been whipping up plum cakes in order to generate funds for Annada outreach, an NGO working to provide food and resources to the vulnerable in Maharashtra under the #BakeforIndia mission.

VI. BEYOND DESIGN BISTRO

This Delhi based bistro is offering meals individual meals for Rs 249 and 3 meals for Rs 669 with additional options of choosing your meal preference.

VII. KIRAN AND RAHUL SAXENA

The Hyderabad based mother-son duo Kiran and Rahul who run a cloud kitchen have joined hands with a delivery agency to provide covid meals to those in isolation.

The initiative consists of meal boxes with varying menu that features soups, salads, dals, curries, desserts, and drinks for the price of INR 150 per vegetarian meal box and 180 for non-vegetarian meal.

VIII. JUST MY ROOTS

Just My Roots has kickstarted a cloud kitchen initiative that encourages restaurants and chefs to comes togethere and offer daily meals for COVID-affected families, two times a day at their doorsteps. The Covid relief meals are cooked by trained chefs who are FSSAI Registered and follow all Food Safety Norms.

IX. MOM AND CO

This Navi-Mumbai based home kitchen is offering simple, home-cooked vegetarian meals for lunch and dinner that comprises of healthy staples like dal, rice, rotis and sabzis, as part of the regular meals for free in and around Navi Mumbai for COVID patients and those in need.

X. #BAKEFORINDIA

An incredible initiative launched by Mumbai-based baker and chef Neysa Mendes, it urges the community of bakers across India to rise to the cause by raising money for covid funds and organisations through bakesales.

Doing something feels so much better than despair and food brings joy, so really, the idea behind the project was to help people find a way to contribute to the relief efforts
