"I love the sensuality of a body. But it is never as an object. The body has its own personality, it has its own dignity."
— Anupam Sud
A recurring feature of renowned print-maker, painter, and collagist Anupam Sud’s creative practice spanning over five decades from the 1970s to now has been the nude — not as objects of desire, suggestions of imminent sexual encounter, or a reference to any moral corrective, but as inhabitants of territories that elude comprehension.
Sud's bodies of work across diverse media — such as prints, paintings, and collages — explore the universal themes of vulnerability, resilience, identity, sexuality, and social issues through the sheer physicality of the human body depicted with raw emotion and profound empathy.
Often set against the rigid, unbending lines of urban spaces, the brooding, self-absorbed figures — enriched with symbolism and metaphors that engage with gender dynamics and human relationships — hold up a mirror to our naked, reflected selves, and reposition our beliefs and ideas through nudging, questioning, challenging the status quo without an aggressive calling out.
As she stands at a transformative crossroads of her life, Anupam Sud's 'The Journey: A Full Circle' at the Pallette Art Gallery, New Delhi, celebrates the artist's prolific career and features 60 works spanning five decades from her early etchings made in the 1970s to her recent experimental print collages developed during the pandemic.
The retrospective-scale exhibition, curated by Kishore Singh, highlights Sud's pioneering contributions to the growth of etching and printmaking in India, and traces her evolution as an artist who is always pushing the boundaries of traditional media while embracing the creative possibilities of "controlled accidents" in her practice.
